Materials Needed For all 7 Sizes
- All yarns used are Caron Simply Soft
- Size I Crochet hook
- Amounts vary on the size, so below is for the largest size.
- 5 ozs. Tan worsted weight #4 yarn – Smallest 1.5 ozs
- 2 ozs. Light Brown worsted weight #4 yarn – Smallest 1 oz.
- 3 – 4 Brown Buttons
- Brown sewing thread and a needle
- Darning needle and scissors
- 1 marker
Neck sizes 7″, 9″ and 11″
Size 7″ is outside of the parentheses and sizes 9″ and 11″ are inside respectively.
Special Sts
V-Stitch- v-st. All in the same st indicated make a dc, ch 1 and a dc.
2 dc cluster- cl. Yo hook and insert in the indicated st. Draw up a loop. 3 loops on the hook. Yo and draw yarn through 2 loops on hook as if to dc. 2 loops rem. Yo And insert your hook in the same st. Draw up a loop. 4 loops on hook. Yo and draw yarn through 2 loops on the hook. 3 loops remain. Yo and draw through all 3 loops.
Multiple of 4 + 6
Beginning at neck edge:
Row 1. Ch 28 (36, 44) make a dc in the 6th ch from the hook. (Sk 1 ch, make a v-st in the next ch) across. Ch 3 and turn. [(12, 16, 20) groups of v-sts.)] Mark the ch 1 space between the 8th and 9th group as the center. Ch 5 and turn. [(12, 16, 20) groups of v-sts.)]
Row 2. Dc in the same st as the turning ch. Counts as a v-st.) (Make v-st between the next 2 v-sts.)
Rep until the middle marked sp. In the marked sp make (v-st, ch 2 and v-st.)
Remark the center, now and throughout.
(Make v-st between the next 2 v-sts.) across. End with v-st in the 3rd ch of the beginning ch 5. Ch 5 and turn. [(14,18, 22) groups of v-sts.)]
Rows 3-4 for 7″ at end of row 4 (18 v-sts made.)
Rows 3-5 for 9″ at end of row 5 (24 v-sts made.)
Rows 3-6 for 11″ at end of row 6 ( 30 v-sts made.)
Rep rnd 2. You will be inc by 2 v-sts each row.
At the end of rnd 4 (5, 6) ch 1 and turn to work across the raw edge of rows you just made.
Row 11. Sc in the 1st st. (Make 2 sc over the bar of each v-st until the top. (Make 10 sts up the side for the 7″ cowl. Make 12 sts up side for the 9″ cowl and 14 sts up the side for the 11″ cowl. Make 3 sts in the corner.
Across the top, make a sc in each ch1 sp and in each st across until the next corner. Make 3 sc in the corner. Working down rows. Make 2 sc over each bar making the same amount of sts as before. Make a sc in the last st. End off and weave in the end.
Bottom
Attach light brown yarn in the bottom right hand corner.
You will be working over the last row on the bottom.
Row 1. Ch 1 and sc in the same st. Make 3 sc in each ch until the center st. (Keep your sts an even amount. You may have to tweak it and do only 2 sts in one space. Just keep the number leading up to the center an even number.
Make 1 sc in the marked center and replace the marker.
Work the next side the same as the 1st, making 3 sc In each space keeping your count even. End off and weave in your ends.
Row 12. Join Light colored yarn in the 1st st made on the last rnd. (Ch 1 and sc in the same st) twice. (Ch 1, sk 1 st and sc in the next st) across until the marked center st.
Ch 2, in the center st make a sc, ch 1 and a sc. (Ch 1, sk 1 st and sc in the next st) across until the last st. In the last st make a sc, ch 1 and a sc. End off and weave in the end. Attach light brown yarn in the last st made.
Row 13. Ch 1 and sc in the same st. (Sc in the next ch 1 sp. Sc in the next sc) across until the marked st. In the marked st make 3 sc. Mark the 2nd sc as center. Ch 1, (sc in the next ch 1 sp. Sc in the next sc) across. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 15. Double crochet in the same st for an beginning cluster st. (Ch 1, sk 1 st and make a cluster in the next st) across until the center marked st. In the marked st make cl, ch 1 and cl. Remove the marker. (Ch 1, sk 1 st and make a cluster in the next st) across.
Buttonhole Side
Row 1. Ch 1 and turn work to the side and make 10 (12, 14) sc up the side. Ch 1 and turn.
Buttonhole Row 2.
You should be starting at the TOP. Sc in the 1st st. (Ch 2 and sk 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 3 (4, 3) sts.) 2 times. (The large size will take 4 buttons.) Ch 2 and sk 2 sts. Sc in each of the rem 3 (4, 3) sts. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 3. Sc in each of the 1st 3 (4, 3) sts. (Sc in each of the next 2 chs. Sc in each of the next 3 (4, 3) sts) 2 times. Sc in each of the next 3, (2,2) chs. Sc in the last st. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 4. Sc in each st across. End off and weave in the end.
Button Side
Row 1. Attach yarn at neck edge and make 10 (12, 14) sc down the side. Ch 1 and turn.
Rows 2-4. Sc in each of the 28 (32, 40) sts across. At the end of row 5, end off and weave in the end. Sew the buttons to match the buttonholes.
Collar
Row 1. Attach brown yarn at the right side on the wrong side of the piece. as shown below.
Ch 1 and Sc in each ch across the tan portion of the neck edge. [28 (32, 40) sc made.] Note: Increase or decrease to get to the correct number of sts.
Row 2. Ch 2 and turn. (Ch 2 does not count as a st. [Dc in the flo of each of the next 3 (4, 5) sts. Inc in the next st] across. If you have sts left just dc in them. [34 (38, 46) sts made.]
Row 3. Ch 2 and turn. (Dc in each of the next 4 (5, 6) sts. Make 2 dc in the next st) across. [38 (44, 50) sts made.]
Collar Shaping
Make 8 trc in the 4th st. (Trc in the next st) 3 times. (Dc in the next st) 2 times. (Hdc into the next st) until only 9 sts remain.
(Dc in the next st) 2 times. (Trc in the next st) 3 times. Make 8 trc in the next st. Join to the last st with a sl st. End off and weave in the end.
Attach yarn to the tab edge as shown below and sc evenly around the collar and the opposite tab. End off and weave in the end. Sew buttons opposite the buttonholes.
