Squished Opossum Door Stop

Materials Needed: 

All yarns are Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight #4. 

3 oz. Gray yarn. 2 oz. White yarn. 1 oz. Red yarn. Scraps of Peach and Black yarns. Size H crochet hook. Small piece of white plastic. (Carton cover.) Two to Three large handfuls of Fiberfil. Darning Needle and Scissors 

Gauge: Not necessary. 

Inside of Mouth 

With red yarn and size H hook, make a magic ring. 

Row 1. Ch 1 and make 5 sc in the ring. Ch 1 and turn. (5 sc made.) 

Row 2. Sc in each of the 5 sc across. 

Row 3. Sc in each of the 1st 2 sts. (Make 2 sc in the next st) twice. Sc in each of the last 2 sts. Ch 1 and turn. (7 sc made.) 

Rows 4-8. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (7 sc made.) 

Row 9. Sc in the next 3 sts. (Make 2 sc in the next st) twice. Sc in each of the last 2 sts. Ch 1 and turn. (9 sc made.) 

Rows 10-13. Sc in each of the 9 sts across. Ch 1 and turn. 

Row 14. Sc in the next 3 sts. (Sc the next 2 sts tog) twice. Sc in each of the las 2 sts. Ch 1 and turn. (7 sc made.) 

Rows 15-19. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (7 sc made.) 

Row 20. Sc in each of the 1st 2 sts. (Sc the next 2 sts tog) twice. Sc in the last st. Ch 1 and turn. (5 sc made.) 

Row 21. Sc all 5 sts tog. End off and weave in the end.Set the piece aside. 

Head 

Starting at nose. With peach yarn and size H hook, make a magic ring. 

Row 1. Ch 1 and make 6 sc in the ring. Ch 1 and turn. (6 sc made.) 

Row 2. Sc in each of the 6 sts across.

Row 3. Sc in each of the 1st 2 sts. (Make 2 sc in the next st) twice. Sc in each of the last 2 sts. Ch 1 and turn. (8 sc made.) 

Row 4. Sc in each st across. End off peach yarn and weave in the end. Join white yarn in the last st worked. With white, ch 1 and turn. (8 sc made.) 

Rows 5-8. With white yarn, sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (8 sc made.) 

Row 9. Sc in the next 3 sts. (Make 2 sc in the next st) twice. Sc in each of the last 3 sts. Ch 1 and turn. (10 sc made.) 

Rows 10-12. Sc in each of the 10 sts across. Ch 1 and turn. Do not ch 1 at the end of row 8, but end off and set the piece aside. Follow rows 1-12 above to make a lower jaw. 

Join jaws together as follows. Place pieces side by side. 

Sc in each of the next 10 sts. Jon to the 1st sc made with a sl st to form a round.(20 sc made.)

Begin Working in Rnds. 

Rnd 1. (Sc In each of the next 4 sts, make 2 sc in the next st) 4 times. Do not join but do mark beg st. (24 sc made.) 

Rnd 2. (Sc In each of the next 5 sts, make 2 sc in the next st) 4 times. Do not join but do mark beg st. (28 sc made.) 

Rnd 3. Sc in each of the 28 sts around. 

Rnd 4. (Sc in each of the next 13 sts. Make 2 sc in the next st) twice. (30 sc made.) Rnd 5. Sc in each of the 30 sts around. 

Rnd 6. (Sc in each of the next 9 sts. Make 2 sc in the next st) around. (33 sc made.)

Begin Body 

Rnd 1. (Sc in each of the next 4 sts make 2 sc in the next st) around. (36 sc made.)

Rnd 2. Sc in each of the 36 sts around. 

Rnd 3. (Sc in each of the next 5 sts make 2 sc in the next st) around. (42 sc made.)

Rnd 4. Sc in each of the 42 sts around. 

Rep rnd 4 until the piece is 5″. 

At this point I like to attach the inside of the mouth. Pin to the inside of the mouth.

Sew inside of mouth to outside of mouth 

Stuff the head and sew a seam under it at the neck. This will leave a flat portion for the door to rest.

Once the head is enclosed, move down about 10 rows and make another seam. This creates the flat part where the door will sit and it also creates the portion of the butt which we will later fill with fiberfill. 

Pick gray yarn back up and continue with the pattern. 

Start Decreasing 

Rnd 1. (Sc in the next 12 sts. Sc the next 2 sts tog) around. (39 sc made.)

Rnds 2-3. Sc in each of the 39 sts around.

Rnd 4. (Sc in the next 11 sts. Sc the next 2 sts tog) around. (36 sc made.)

Rnd 5. Sc in each of the 36 sts around. 

Rnd 6. (Sc in the next 4 sts. Sc the next 2 sts tog) around. (30 sc made.)

Rnd 7. (Sc in the next 8 sts. Sc the next 2 sts tog) around. (27 sc made.)

Rnd 8. Sc in each of the 27 sts around. 

Rnd 9. (Sc in each of the next 7 sts. Sc the next 2 sts tog) around. (24 sc made.)

Rnd 10. Sc in the 24 sts around.

With peach yarn make a magic circle. 

Rnd 1. Ch 1 and make 4 sc in the ring. Tighten. 

Rnd 2. (Sc in next st make 2 sc in the next st around.) Do NOT join but do mark the 1st st. (6 sc made.) 

Rnds 3-10. Sc in each of the 6 sts around. 

Rnd 11. Make 2 sc in 1st st. Sc in the rem 5 sts. (7 sc made.) 

Rnds 12-23. Sc in each of the 7 sts around. 

Rnd 24. Make 2 sc in 1st st. Sc in the rem 6 sts. (8 sc made.) 

Rnds 25-30. Sc in each of the 8 sts around. 

Rnd 31. Make 2 sc in 1st st. Sc in the rem 7 sts. (9 sc made.)

Sew the tail to the back end of the animal. 

Ears – Make 2 

With Gray yarn and size H hook make a magic circle. 

Rnd 1. In the circle make 6 sc. Do NOT join but do mark 1st st. (6 sc made)

Rnd 2. Make 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc made.) 

Rnd 3. (Sc in 1st st, make 2 sc in next st) around. (18 sc made.) 

Rnd 4. (Make 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, make 2 sc in next st) around. (24 sc made.)

Rnds 5-6. Sc in each of the 30 sts around. 

Rnd 7. (Sc in the next st. Sc the next 2 sts tog) around. End off leaving a long tail. Set aside.

Finishing The Ears 

Using tail sew the ears close gathering slightly. 

Sew each ear to the top side of the head as shown below. Embroider two X’s for eyes under ears.

Tongue 

With red yarn ch 10. Dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each rem Ch across. End off leaving a long tail and sew to the inside of the mouth. 

Legs and Feet – Make 4 

Legs 

With gray yarn and H hook make a magic circle. 

Rnd 1. Ch 1 and make 5 sc in the ring. Do not join but do mark 1st st. 

Rnd 2. Make 2 sc in each st around. (10 sc made.) 

Rnd 3. (Sc in the next st, make 2 sc in the next st) around. (15 sc made.)

Rnds 4 – 8. Sc in each st around. End off leaving a long tail.

Feet 

With peach yarn and H hook make a magic circle. 

Rnd 1. Ch 1, in ring make (sc, ch 3. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in the next ch) 5 times. Make 5 more sc in the ring and join to beg sc with a sl st. 

Sew foot to leg as shown below. 

If desired, cut 3-4 little shards for teeth and glue inside of mouth as shown below. (I used a plastic top of a cottage cheese container.)
