Court Jester Mardi Gras Half Mask

Common Abbreviations used:

Materials Needed:  

Stitch markers. Size B/1 (2.25 MM) steel crochet hook. 1.9 Ounces yellow cotton crochet thread size  #10 bedspread weight. 0.2 ounces (6 grams) Purple cotton Crochet thread size #10 bedspread  weight. 0.4 ounces (12 grams) Green cotton crochet thread size # 10 bedspread weight.

Notions Needed:  

Fabric stiffener (or use recipe provided.) 5# coffee can or appropriate plastic form for shaping  mask. 5 – 13 mm Jingle bells. Glue Gun and Glue. 5 small tubes (such as toilet paper rolls) cut to  2” and wrapped with saran wrap. 4 yards Green Ribbon.  

Mask  

Eye Socket Side 1 – Rnd 1: Beginning at eye hole, with yellow thread and B hook, ch 38, being careful  not to twist ch, join to first ch with sl st to form ring.Ch 1, in joining make sc, hdc and sc (mark hdc as  outside eye edge.) Sc in each of the next 18 ch. In next ch make sc, hdc, sc, (mark hdc as inside edge.) Sc  in each of the next 18 ch. Join to first sc with sl st. (42 sts.)  

Rnd 2: Ch 3, (counts as first dc now and throughout) Make 5 dc in marked st. (Replace marker in 3rd st.)  (Dc in each of the next 4 sc. Make 2 dc in next sc.) 3 times. Dc in each of the next 3 sts. Hdc in next st.  Make 2 sc in next st, Sc in marked st. (Replacing Marker.) Make 2 sc in next st. Hdc in next st. Dc in each  of the next 3 sts. (Make 2 dc in next sc, Dc in each of the next 4 sc.) 2 times. Dc in each of the last 4 sts.  Join to top of first ch-3 with sl st. (54 sts.)  

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc. Make 5 dc in marked dc, (replacing marker in 3rd dc.) Dc in each of the next  9 sts. Hdc in each of the next 4 sts. Sc in each of the next 4 sts. Hdc in each of the next 3 sts. Dc in each  of the next 3 sts. In next st make (hdc, and 2 sc – marking hdc.) Sc in each of the next 6 sts – removing  marker. In next st make (2 sc and hdc – marking hdc.) Dc in each of the next 3 sts. Hdc in each of the  next 3 sts. Sc in each of the next 4 sts. Hdc in each of the next 4 sts. Dc in each of the last 5 sts. Join to  top of beginning ch-3. End off and weave in ends.  

(You should now have a piece with 62 sts and 3 markers – having 25 stitches at top of eyepiece and  bottom of eyepiece between the markers. The 2 markers are on the inside edge and the 1 marker is on  the outside edge. Set aside.)  

Eye Socket Side 2: Repeat Eye Socket Side 1 Rnds 1-3. 

Prepping Eye Sockets: With right sides together and matching markers. Sew side 1 and 2 together  between inside 4 markers. Remove inside markers but LEAVE the outside markers. There should be 50  stitches at top and 50 stitches at bottom of mask between outside markers to be worked later. Note:  Count the stitches carefully.  

Face of Mask – Row 1: Attach Yellow thread in any marked st. Ch 10 and end off. Attach Yellow thread  in the other marked st on the opposite side. Ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 9 chs.  

Sc in next st on face of mask and in each of the next 24 sts. Dc in joining between eye sockets. (Mark this  st as center.) Sc in each of the next 25 sts. Sc in each of the last 10 chs. Ch 1, turn. (71 sc made.)  

Row 2: Follow this row very carefully. Sc in each of the first 3 sts. Hdc in next st. Dc in each of the next 10  sts.  

Hdc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 3 sts.  

Hdc in next st. Dc in next 2 st. Trc in next st. Make 3 trc in next st. (Mark middle st.)  Trc in next st. Dc in next 2 st. Hdc in next st. Sc in each of the next 3 sts.  

Hdc in each of the next 2 st. Make 2 dc in next st. Trc in next st. In marked center st make 3 dtrc. (Mark  middle st.)  

Trc in next st. Make 2 dc in next st. Hdc in each of the next 2 st. Sc in each of the next 3 sts. Hdc in next  st. Dc in next 2 st. Trc in next st. Make 3 trc in next st. (Mark middle st.)

Row 3: (Note: you can remove markers on this row.) Sl st in first 2 sts. Sc dec over next 2 sts. Sc in each  of the next 2 sts. Hdc in next 2 st. Dc in each of the next 10 st.  

Hdc in next 3 st. Dc in next 3 sts. Make 2 dc in next st. dc in next st. Make 5 dc in marked st. Dc in next st.  Make 2 dc in next st. Dc in next 3 sts. Hdc in next st. Sc in next st.  

Hdc in next 2 st. Dc in next 3 st. Make 2 dc in next st. Dc in next st. Make 5 dc in marked st. Dc in next  st. Make 2 dc in next st. Dc in next 3 st. Hdc in next 2 st. Sc in next st. Middle nose piece made.  

Hdc in next st. Dc in next 3 sts. Make 2 dc in next st Dc in next st. Make 5 dc in marked st. Dc in next st.  Make 2 dc in next st. Dc in next 3 sts.  

Hdc in next 3 st. Dc in each of the next 10 st. Hdc in each of the next 2 st. Sc in next 2 sts. Sc dec over  next 2 sts. Sl sl st in last 2 sts. End with a sl st in tip. End off and weave in end.  

Prepare top by finding center stitch and marking it. You should have 37 stitches on each side of the  marker. Place a marker in each end st.  

Row 1: Attach thread in right-side end marked st with a sl st. Sl st into next 2 st. Sl st next 2 sts together.  Sc next 2 sts together. Hdc in next st. (Dc decrease over the next 2 sts) two times. Dc In next st.

Jester Hat – Make 1 purple, 2 green and 2 yellow.  

Row 1: With #10 thread and size B hook, ch 2. Make 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (2 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  Row 2: Make 2 sc in each sc. (4 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Row 3: Make 2 sc in each sc. (8 sc made.) Ch 1, turn. 

Row 4: Make 2 sc in first sc. Make 2 sc in next sc. Sc in each sc until the last 2 sc. (Make 2 sc in next sc)  twice. (12 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Row 5: Make 2 sc in first sc. Make 2 sc in next sc. Sc in each sc until the last 2 sc. (Make 2 sc in next sc)  twice. (16 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Row 6: Make 2 sc in first sc. Make 2 sc in next sc. Sc in each sc until the last 2 sc. (Make 2 sc in next sc)  twice. (20 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Rows 7-11: Work even on 20 sts for 5 rows. Chaining 1 at the end of each row.  

Row 12: Make a sc dec over first 2 sts. Sc in each of the next sts on row until only 2 remain. Make a sc  dec over last 2 sts. (18 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Rows 13-20: Work even on 18 sts. Chaining 1 at the end of each row.  

Row 21: Make a sc dec over first 2 sts. Sc in each of the next sts on row until only 2 remain. Make a sc  dec over last 2 sts. (16 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Rows 21-28: Work even on 16 sts. Chaining 1 at the end of each row.  

Row 29: Make a sc dec over first 2 sts. Sc in each of the next sts on row until only 2 remain. Make a sc  dec over last 2 sts. (14 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Rows 30-34: Work even on 14 sts. Chaining 1 at the end of each row.  

Row 35: Make a sc dec over first 2 sts. Sc in each of the next sts on row until only 2 remain. Make a sc  dec over last 2 sts. (12 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Rows 36-40: Work even on 12 sts. Chaining 1 at the end of each row.  

Row 41: Make a sc dec over first 2 sts. Sc in each of the next sts on row until only 2 remain. Make a sc  dec over last 2 sts. (10 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Rows 42-44: Work even on 10 sts. Chaining 1 at the end of each row.  

Row 45: Make a sc dec over first 2 sts. Sc in each of the next sts on row until only 2 remain. Make a sc  dec over last 2 sts. (8 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Rows 46-48: Work even on 8 sts. Chaining 1 at the end of each row. 

Row 49: Make a sc dec over first 2 sts. Sc in each of the next sts on row until only 2 remain. Make a sc  dec over last 2 sts. (6 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Rows 50-52 : Work even on 6 sts. Chaining 1 at the end of each row.  

Row 53: Make a sc dec over first 2 sts. Sc in each of the next sts on row until only 2 remain. Make a sc  dec over last 2 sts. (4 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Rows 53-55 : Work even on 4 sts. Chaining 1 at the end of each row.  

Row 56: Make sc dec over first 2 sc and last 2 sc. (2 sc made.)  

Row 58: Sc in each of the 2 sc across.  

Row 59: Sc both sc together. Ch 1, turn.  

Finishing hat piece  

Sc evenly around entire piece. Making increases as needed. Join to first sc with sl st. Weave in all ends.  Sew 1 jingle bell to wrong side of tip as shown below. Set piece aside until all 5 pieces are made.  

Stiffen Hat pieces  

Dip hat pieces in stiffener being careful not to get jingle bell in stiffener. Arrange pieces on a flat surface  as shown below. Place a piece of plastic wrapped tubing on piece and arrange tip of hat piece to curve over as shown below. Let dry completely.

Heat glue gun and glue Purple and Green pieces to mask as shown below and glue yellow pieces behind  the green and purple pieces as shown on cover. 

Cut ribbon into 4 pieces-1 yard each. Knot together at center and glue to mask at sides. Trim ribbon in a  pleasing manner. (If mask is to be worn- tack ribbon to sides of mask.)
