I Love Bones

Sizes  

  • Small – 6 ¾” across top and 5” from top to bottom point.  
  • Medium – 9” across top and 6 ½” from top to bottom point.  
  • Large – 11” across top and 7 ¾” from top to bottom point.  

Materials Needed  

1 to 2 ounces of Black worsted weight yarn. (Depending upon the size.) Small amounts of red, yellow  and white cotton thread (size 5 or embroidery floss). Dog Collar. Darning needle. Sizes I and B crochet  hooks.  

Abbreviations Used  

  • ch = chain  
  • sc = single crochet  
  • hdc = half double crochet  
  • dc = double crochet  
  • trc = treble crochet  
  • dtrc = double treble crochet  

Small Dogs  

Starting at top  

With Black and I hook, ch 21 loosely.  

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each sc across. (20 sc made.) Ch 1, turn. 

Rows 2-12: Sc in each of the 20 sc across. Ch 1, turn. 

Row 13: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 16 sc. Sc last 2 sc together. Ch 1, turn. (18 sc made.)  

Row 14: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each sc until only 2 sc remain. Sc last 2 sc together. Ch 1, turn. (16 sc  made.)  

Repeat row 14 until only 2 sc remain.  

Sc last 2 sc together. Sc around entire piece. Join to first sc with sl st. End off and weave in end.

Instructions: Fold top over 1 ½” and sew in place for collar casing.  

Med Dogs  

Starting at top  

With Black and I hook, ch 33 loosely.  

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each sc across. (32 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Rows 2-14: Sc in each of the 32 sc across. Ch 1, turn.  

Row 15: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 28 sc. Sc last 2 sc together. Ch 1, turn. (30 sc made.)  

Row 16: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each sc until only 2 sc remain. Sc last 2 sc together. Ch 1, turn. (28 sc  made.)  

Repeat row 16 until only 2 sc remain.  

Sc last 2 sc together. Sc around entire piece. Join to first sc with sl st. End off and weave in end.  Instructions: Fold top over 1 ½” and sew in place for collar casing.  

Large Dogs  

Starting at top  

With Black and I hook, ch 41 loosely. 

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each sc across. (40 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.  

Rows 2-16: Sc in each of the 40 sc across. Ch 1, turn.  

Row 17: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 36 sc. Sc last 2 sc together. Ch 1, turn. (38 sc made.)  

Row 18: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each sc until only 2 sc remain. Sc last 2 sc together. Ch 1, turn. (36 sc  made.)  

Repeat row 18 until only 2 sc remain.  

Sc last 2 sc together. Sc around entire piece. Join to first sc with sl st. End off and weave in end.  Instructions: Fold top over 1 ½” and sew in place for collar casing.  

Heart – For Small Size – Make 1 for each bandana  

With Red thread and size B hook, ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in next st. Hdc in next st. Dc in next st.  In end ch make (3 dc, ch 3, sl st, ch 3, 3 dc.) Working along opposite side of ch, dc in next st. Hdc in next  st. Sc in next st. Sl st in last st. Sl st in first sl st to join. End off leaving a 12” tail to sew to bandana.  

Heart – For Large and Medium Sizes– – Make 1 for each bandana  With Red thread and size B hook, ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch. Hdc in next ch. (Dc in next  ch) twice. (Trc in next ch) twice. In end ch make (6 dtrc, 2 trc, ch 3, sl st back into end ch.) Still working in  end ch for opposite arch, ch 3. Make 2 trc and 6 dtrc in same end st. Working along opposite side of ch,  . (trc in next ch) twice. (Dc in next ch) twice. Hdc in next ch. Sc in each of the last 2 ch. Join to first sc with  sl st. End off leaving a 12” tail to sew to bandana.  

Bones For Small Size – Make 2 for each small bandana  

With white thread and size B hook, ch 12, sc in 2nd ch from hook. In same st make (2 dc, 1 hdc.) Sc in next 9 chs. In end st make (1 hdc, 2 dc, ch 1, sc, ch 1, 2 dc, 1 hdc.) Working along opposite side of ch, sc  in next 9 chs. In end ch make (1 hdc, 2 dc, ch 1) sl st into first sc to join. End off leaving a 12” tail to sew  to bandana. 

Bones For Large and Medium Sizes– Make 2 for each bandana  With white thread and size B hook, ch 14, sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, in same st make (2 dc, 1 hdc.) Sc  in each of the next 10 chs. Sc in next st. In end st make (1 hdc, 2 dc, ch 1, sc, ch 1, 2 dc, 1 hdc.) Working  along opposite side of ch, Sc in each of the next 10 chs. In end ch make (1 hdc, 2 dc, ch 1) sl st into first  sc to join. End off leaving a 12” tail to sew to bandana.  

Letter “I” for Small Dogs – Make 1 for each bandana.  

With yellow thread and B hook, Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 5 ch. ** Ch 3, make  2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in next ch. Sc in top of the next sc. Ch 3, make 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in  next sc. * Sl st in each st until end. Repeat from ** to * across. End with sl st into first sc made. End off  leaving a 12” tail to sew to bandana.  

Letter “I” for Large and Medium Size – Make 1 for each bandana.  With yellow thread and B hook, Ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 8 ch. ** Ch 3,  make 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in next ch. Sc in top of the next sc. Ch 3, make 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook.  Sc in next sc. * Sl st in each st until end. Repeat from ** to * across. End with sl st into first sc made. End  off leaving a 12” tail to sew to bandana.  

Finishing  

Pin and sew all motifs to bandana as shown below. Be careful to sew the letter “I” through the first  thickness so you do not close the casing for the collar. Weave collar through casing.
