Materials Needed
Big Twist yarns size #4 in colors:
2 ½ ounces Dark Denim, 4 ½ Light Denim, 3 ounces Blush Pink, 2 ounces Dark Rose, 2 ¾ ounces Dark Teal, 3 ounces Light Teal, 2 ounces light yellow and 6 ounces White. Any Brand: 1 ounce Black worsted weight yarn for eyes. ½ ounce orange worsted weight yarn for beaks.
Size H crochet hook. 15 – ¾” white buttons. White sewing thread and needle.

13 sc = 4” and 14 R = 4”

Special Stitches
How to Make a 5 dc decrease: (yo hook and insert in the st indicated. Draw up a loopand pull through the first 2 loops on hook as if to make a dc) Repeat for a total of 5 times. Yo hook and draw through all 6 loops to finish dc.
Info: Belly is made with 2 colors. Chain-2 at the beginning of row or round counts as the first double crochet unless otherwise stated.
How to change colors: There are many ways to change colors. I recommend that you look up a tutorial online – there are many good ones out there. Use the one that works the best for you.
Blanket
Starting at Owl Bottom
Striped Owl – Make 3
(1 dk pink and lt pink. 1 lt green and dk green. 1 dk blue and lt blue.)
With MC Yarn and I hook, ch 35
Row 1: (Right Side) make 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook (first 2 chs count as first dc), skip next 3 chs, sc in next ch. (Skip next 3 chs, make 5 dc in next ch. Skip next 3 chs, sc in next ch) across until last 4 chs, skip next 3 chs, make 3 dc in last ch, changing color (see Pattern Notes) to 2nd color in last st, turn. Fasten off the first color and weave in the end. (3 full shells and two ½ shells made. Half shells are at the beginning and end.)
Row 2: With CC, ch I, sc in first dc, ch 3, dc dec (see Pattern Notes) in next 5 sts, ch 3, (sc in next dc, ch 3, dc dec over next 5 sts, ch 3) across ending with sc in last st. turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, (see Pattern Notes) make 2 dc in joining. Sc in next dc decrease st, (make 5 dc in next sc, sc in next dc decrease) across to last sc, make 3 dc in last sc, changing to first color in last st, turn. Fasten off 2nd color and weave in the end.
Row 3: Ch I, sc in first st, ch 3, make a 5 dc decrease over the next 5 sts. (Ch 3, sc in next dc. Ch 3, make a dc decrease over the next 5 sts across, ending with ch 3, sc In last st. Turn.
Row 5: Ch 2, make 2 dc in the same st as beginning ch-2. Sc in next dc decrease. (Make 5 dc in next sc, sc in next 5 dc decrease) across, ending with 3 dc in last st, changing to 2nd color in last st, turn. Fasten off and weave in the end.
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 3, make a 5 dc decrease over the next 5 sts. (Ch 3, sc in next dc. Ch 3, make a dc decrease over the next 5 sts across, ending with ch 3, sc In
last st, turn. End off CC colore and weave in the end. Mark this side as RS.
Row 7: Attach MC yarn in first st to right on RS. Ch 1 and sc in same st. (Make 3 sc in the next ch-3 loop, sc in the eye of the next dec. Make 3 sc in the next ch-3 loop. Sc in next st) across. (33 sts made.) Turn.
Row 8: Sc in each st across dec 1 st in the middle of the row. (32 sts made.) Rows 9 – 31: Ch 1 and sc in each of the 32 sts across. Turn.
Finishing: Ch 1 and make 3 sc in corner (marking 2nd st as corner.) Turn to work over rows and (make 30 sc down side. Make 3 sc in the corner again marking 2nd st as corner) around. End with sc in each of the last 30 sts. Join the first sc with sl st. End off and weave in the end. Marking all corners will make it easier for later. If you do not have enough markers, just use a piece of contrasting yarn. Block to 10” x 10” square. Set aside.
Solid Color Owls on Middle Row
(1 dk green, 1 lt blue and 1 pink)
Row 1: With yarn and size H hook, ch 36. ** Skip 2 chs, in the next ch make (sc, ch 1 and dc.) * Repeat from ** to * across. End with sc in last st. (12 ch-1 shells made.) Ch 1 and turn.
Row 2: In the next ch-1 space make (sc, ch 1 and dc) across. End with sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn.
Repeat row 2 until the piece is square. Finish once again by making 3 sc in each corner (marking 2nd st as corner) and 30 sc down each of the 4 sides for a total of 132 stitches. Join the first sc with sl st. End off and weave in the end. Block to 10” x 10” square. Set aside.Set aside .
Top row of Owls
(1 lt green, 1 yellow and 1 lt blue.)
Row 1: With yarn and H hook, ch 35. Skip 2 ch. Sc in next ch. ** Skip 1 ch, make 2 sc in the next ch. * Repeat from ** to * across. End with sc in last st. (33 sts made.) Ch 1 and turn.
Row 2: Sc in first st. ** Skip 1 sc, make 2 sc in the next st. * Repeat from ** to * across. End with sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. (32 sts made)
Repeat row 2 until the piece is square. Finish once again by making 3 sc in each corner (marking 2nd st as corner) and 30 sc down each of the 4 sides for a total of 32 stitches. Join the first sc with sl st. End off and weave in the end. Block to 10” x 10” square. Set aside.Set aside .
Solid Color Wings
(Make 6 right and 6 left)
(1 set dark pink, 2 sets dark green, 1 dark blue, 1 light pink and 1 light blue) Right Wing
Row 1: Ch 7 and sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in next st. Hdc in each of the next 2 sts. Dc in next st. make 5 dcs in the next st. Ch 3 and turn. (10 sts made.)
Row 2: Dc in the same st as turning ch-3 for an increase. (Make 2 dc in next st) 3 times. Dc in next st. Hdc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Make 2 sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. (15 sts made.)
Row 3: Make 2 sc in 1st st. Sc in each of the next 6 sts. Make 2 hdc in the next st. (In next st make, 2 dc. Dc in next dc) 3 times. End with dc in last st. (20 sts made.) Ch 3 and turn.
Row 4: Dc in the same st as turning ch. (Dc in next st. make 2 dc in next st.) 4 times. Hdc in each of the next 3 sts. Sc in each of the next 7 sts. Make 2 sts in last st. (25 sts made) End off and weave in end for right side and continue on to finishing for left wing.
Finishing
Attach yarrn at the edge as shown above. Ch 1 and sl st in the same st. (Make 3 dc in next st. Skip 1 st, sl st in next st.) 4 times. Make 3 dc in the next st. Skip 1 st and sc in each of the last 11 sts. End off.
Left Wing
Repeat rows 1-4 above.
Finishing for left wing. Ch 1 and sc in each of the next 11 sts. (Skip 1 st, make 3 dc in the next st. Sl st in next st.) across remaining sts. End off and weave in the end.
Muli-Color Wings
(Make 6 – 3 right and 3 left)
1 set yellow, lt pink, lt blue and dk blue.
1 set light pink, lt blue, lt green and dk green.
1 set lt blue, dk pink, dk blue and yellow.
Right Wing
Row 1: With color 1, ch 7 and sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in next st. Hdc in each of the next 2 sts. Dc in next st. make 5 dcs in the next st. Ch 3 and turn. (10 sts made.)
Row 2: Dc in the same st as turning ch-3 for an increase. (Make 2 dc in next st) 3 times. Dc in next st. Hdc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Make 2 sc in last st. End off and weave in the end. (15 sts made.)
Row 3: Join color 2 in last st worked, Ch 1 and make 2 sc in 1st st. Sc in each of the next 6 sts. Make 2 hdc in the next st. (In next st make, 2 dc. Dc in next dc) 3 times. End with dc in last st. (20 sts made.) End off color 2 and weave in the end.
Row 4: Join color 3 in the last st worked, ch 3 and dc in the same st. (Dc in next st. make 2 dc in next st.) 4 times. Hdc in each of the next 3 sts. Sc in each of the next 7 sts. Make 2 sts in the last st. (25 sts made) End off and weave in the end.
Finishing
Attach yarrn at the edge as shown above. Ch 1 and sl st in the same st. (Make 3 dc in next st. Skip 1 st, sl st in next st.) 4 times. Make 3 dc in the next st. Skip 1 st and sc in each of the last 11 sts. End off.
Left Wing
Repeat rows 1-4 above.
Finishing for left wing. Attach color 4 as shown above and ch 1, sc in each of the next 11 sts. (Skip 1 st, make 3 dc in the next st. Sl st in next st.) across remaining sts. End off and weave in the end.
Eyebrows Make 1 for each Owl
(1 dk pink, 3 dk green, 2 dk blue, 1 yellow, 1 lt pink and 1 lt blue.)
With H hook and colored yarn, ch 44. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook. Sl st in each of the next 3 chs. Sc in next ch. Sc next 3 chs tog for a dec. Hdc in each of the next 6 chs. Make 3 sc in the next ch. Sc in next ch. Sl st in each of the next 4 chs. Sl st next 3 chs tog marking this st as center of forehead.
Sl st in each of the next 4 chs. Sc in next ch. Make 3 sc in the next ch. Hdc in each of the next 6 chs. Sc each of the next 3 chs tog. Sc in next ch. Sl st in each of the next 3 chs. Make 3 sl sts in the end ch.
Working on the opposite side of ch, sl st in each of the next 3 sts. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Make 3 sc in the next st. Hdc in each of the next 6 chs. Sc next 3 sts tog for a dec. Sl st in each of the next 4 sts. In center st make (sl st, sc and sl st.) Sl st in each of the next 4 chs. Sc next 3 sts tog. Hdc in each of the next 6 sts. Make 3 sc in the next st. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sl st in each of the next 4 sts. Join to the first sl st with sl st. End off leaving a tail to sew to block. Set aside.
Black Parts of Eyes – Make 15
Round 1: With Black yarn and H hook, make a magic circle. Ch 1 and make 8 sc in loop. Tighten loop and join to first sc with sl st. (8 sc made.)
Round 2: Ch 1 and make 2 sc in each st around. Join the first sc with sl st. End off leaving a tail to sew to block. Set aside. (16 sc made.)
Colored Part of Eye – Make 15
(6 lt blue, 3 lt pink, 4 yellow and 2 lt green) Note: Button can be sew off-center sometimes and in the center sometimes. Refer to picture.
Round 1: With Colored yarn and H hook, make a magic circle. Ch 1 and make 8 sc in loop. Tighten the loop and join to the first sc with sl st. (8 sc made.)
Round 2: Ch 1 and make 2 sc in each st around. Join the first sc with sl st (16 sc made.)
Round 3: Ch 1, (make 2 sc in first st. Sc in next st) around. Join the first sc with sl st. (24 sc made.)
Round 4: Ch 1, (make 2 sc in first st. Sc in each of the next 2 sts) around. Join the first sc with sl st. End off leaving a tail to sew to block. Set aside. (30 sc made.)
Beak – Make 9
Round 1: With Orange and H hook, make a magic circle. Ch 1 and make 8 sc in the ring. Tighten the circle. Join to first sc with sl st. (8 sts made)
Round 2: Ch 1, in first st make (sc, hdc and sc.) Mark hdc as beak top. (Sc in next st, make 3 sc in next st) 3 times. Sc in last st. Join to first sc with sl st. (16 sts made)
Round 3: Ch 1 and sc in first st. In the top marked corner st make (dc, ch-3 picot and dc.) Sc in next st. Sl st in each of the next 2 sts. In the next corner make (sc, ch 1 and sc.) Sl st in each of the next 7 sts. In the last corner make (sc, ch 1 and sc.) Sl st in each st up until marked tip. End off leaving the tail to sew to block. Set aside.
Assembling Block Faces.
1. Sew button to black Pupil.
2. Sew Black piece of eye to Colored piece of eye.
Note: Button can be sew off-center sometimes and in the center sometimes. Refer to main picture.
3. Sew Black portion of Eye to colored portion. Set aside.
Note: Pupils may be sewn offset or in middle.
4. Pin and sew eyebrows to the corresponding block.
5. Pin and sew wings to block.
6. Pin and sew eyes to block.
Pin and sew beak to block as shown below.
8. Eyes may also be embroidered as shown below.
Set the finished block aside until all are finished.
Once all blocks have been completed they must be joined. Blocks can be joined in any way you wish. Here is the option I chose.
Block 1: With white yarn complete an edging around the top left block as shown below. Join white yarn in any corner. Ch 1 and sc in the same corner. Ch 3 and sc in the same sp. ** (Ch 3, skip 2 sts, sc in next st) until the next corner. Ch 3 and sc once again in the same corner st. * Repeat form ** to * around. End with (ch 3, skip 2 sts, sc in next st) until 2 sts before the first st was made, ch 3 and skip 2 sts. Join the first sc with sl st. End off and weave in the end.
11 ch-3 loops on each side and 1 ch-3 loop in each corner for a total of 48 ch-3 loops made. Repeat on 9 blocks. Once blocks have been edged, begi Dn to join as follows.
Attach yarn in the right hand block at the top corner as shown below and ch 2.
Hdc in the corner loop of the left block. Hdc back into the beginning corner loop on the right-hand block. Hdc in the back into the corner loop of the left-hand block.
Make 3 hdc in the next ch-3 loop on the right block.
Skip the next ch-3 loop on left block and make 3 hdc in next loop.
(Skip next loop on right block and make 3 hdc in next loop Skip next loop on left block and make 3 hdc in next loop) Repeat across. End with skip the next loop on the right block and make 3 hdc in the next loop. Skip loop on left block and hdc in corner loop. Hdc in corner loop on right block. Hdc in the corner loop of left block Ch 2 and sl st into the corner loop of right block. End off and weave in the end.
Join Rows
Once two rows have been completed, join as follows.
Attach yarn in the right hand block at the top corner of the bottom block. Hdc in the corner loop of the top block. Hdc back into corner loop on bottom block. Hdc is back into the corner loop of the top block.
Make 3 hdc in the next ch-3 loop on the bottom block. Skip the next ch-3 loop on the top block and make 3 hdc in the next loop.
Skip next loop on bottom block and make 3 hdc in next loop Skip next loop on top block and make 3 hdc in next loop) Repeat across until first corner st.
Hdc in first top corner st. Hdc in the opposite bottom corner st. Hdc over bar of 1st hdc on top. Hdc over the bar of 1st hdc on bottom. . Hdc over bar of 2nd hdc on top. Hdc over bar of 2nd hdc on bottom. Hdc over top corner st. Hdc over bottom corner st.
Continue in this manner across the row. End off as before and weave in end.
Blanket Edging
Round 1: Attach White yarn in any corner space, ch 1 and make 3 sc in the same space. ** (Make 2 sc in the next loop) 11 times. Make 7 sc across joining sts.

Round 2: First corner: Ch 1, sc in first st. ** Make 3 dcs in the next st. Ch 3, skip corner st and make 3 dc in next st.
(Sc in next st. Skip 2 sts, make 3 dc in the next st. Ch 2, skip 2 sts, make 3 dcs in the next st. Skip 2 sts) Repeat form ( to ) across to the next corner. Sc in next st * and repeat from ** to * around. End with Join to first sc with sl st.
Round 3: Sl st into middle dc for the first 3-dc group. Ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch-1.) In corner space make (dc, ch 2) twice. Dc once again in the same corner space. ** Ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc. (Ch 1 and dc in next sc. Ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc. Ch 1, in the next ch-2 loop make (dc, ch 2 and dc.) * Repeat from ** to * until the next corner is reached. Ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc. (Ch 1 and dc in next sc. Ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc. Ch 1, in corner make (dc, ch 2, dc, ch 2 and dc.) Repeat the process again. End with ch 1 and sl st into 3rd ch of beginning ch-3.
Round 4: Ch 1 and sc in first st. Sc in next ch-1 space. ** In the next ch-2 space make (sc, picot and sc) twice for the corner. [Sc in next ch-1 space, sc in next dc) 3 times. Sc in next ch-1 space. In next ch-2 space make (sc, picot and sc)] * repeat from ** to * until corner space around. Join the first sc with sl st. End off and weave in the end.
