Materials Needed: 8 ounces Red #4 yarn. 3 1/2 ounces Black #4 yarn. Sizes J and I hooks. Darning needle. Needle and thread. One 1” snap.

Gauge: 3 stitches = 1” and 3 rows = 1”

Size: 27” from top of hood to bottom of bag. Chest – 26”. (0-18 months)

Hint: Do not remove markers until told to.

Starting at bottom

Round 1: With red yarn and size I hook, chain 84. Join with a slip stitch to form a circle.

Round 2: Chain 3, counts as first double crochet. Double crochet in each chain around. Join to top of beginning chain-3 with slip stitch. (84 double crochets made.)

Round 3: Chain 3, front post double crochet around next double crochet, ** back post double crochet around next double crochet. Front post double crochet around next double crochet.* Repeat from ** to * around. Join to top of beginning chain-3 with slip stitch. (84 double crochets made.)

Round 4: Repeat Row 3.

Round 5: Switch to size J hook. Chain 1, single crochet in joining. Single crochet in each single crochet around. (84 single crochet made.)

Round 6: Single crochet in each single crochet around. Repeat row 5 until piece is 11” long.

Next Row: **Single crochet in each of the next 19 stitches. Single crochet next 2 stitches together.* Repeat from ** to * around. (80 single crochet made.)

Round 3: Single crochet in each single crochet around. Repeat row 3 until piece is 14” long.

Begin Front Opening and start working in Rows.

Row 1: With Red yarn chain 4. Single crochet in second chain from hook and in each of the next 3 chains. Single crochet in remaining 80 stitches. Do NOT join, but chain 1 and turn. (84 single crochet made.)

Row 2: Single crochet in each single crochet across. Chain 1, turn. (84 single crochet made.) Repeat row 2 four more times. (6 total rows will have been completed.)

Begin Shoulder Shaping

With front facing, on tab side count over 24 stitches, place a marker in the 24th stitch. On opposite front side, count over 20 stitches, place marker in 20th stitch.

Antennae – Make 2

Round 1: With black yarn, chain 2. Make 6 single crochet in 2nd chain from hook. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch.

Round 2: Chain 1, make 2 single crochet in each single crochet around. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch. (12 single crochet.)

Round 3: Chain 1, (single crochet in next single crochet, make 2 single crochet in next single crochet) around. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch. (18 single crochet.)

Rounds 4-5: Chain 1, single crochet in each single crochet around. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch.

Round 6: (Single crochet in next single crochet, single crochet next 2 single crochet together) around. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch. (12 single crochet.)

Round 7: (Single crochet next 2 single crochet together) around. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch.

Stuff lightly

Round 8: Chain 1, make 4 single crochet around opening. (You will need to decrease 2 stitches.) Join to first single crochet with slip stitch.

Rounds 9-11: Chain 1, single crochet in each of the 4 single crochet around end off leaving a 12” tail to sew to top of hood as shown below.



Lady Bug Spots Make as many as desired (9 shown. 5 front and 4 back)

Round 1: With black, chain 3 (counts as double crochet now and throughout) double crochet 11 times in 3rd Chain from hook, join with slip stitch to top of beginning chain 3. (12 double crochet)

Round 2: Chain 3, double crochet in same stitch as joining, make 2 double crochet in each stitch around, join with slip stitch to top of beginning chain 3. (24 double crochet) End off leaving a 20” tail to sew to body of blanket.


Bottom Tie

With Red, chain 100. Weave tie through bottom round of double crochets. Tie knots in each end. Tie into a bow.
