Racoon Mask

Materials needed

½ ounce of Gray worsted weight cotton yarn such as Peaches and Cream.

½ ounce of Black worsted weight cotton yarn

¼ ounce white worsted weight cotton yarn 10” piece of ¼” elastic or optional ties Darning Needle

Size H hook Stiffener

Mask form - could be bought or an old coffee can will work.


Abbreviations Used:

st = stitch ch = chain

sl st = slip stitch

sc = single crochet dc = double crochet trc = treble crochet tog = together

sp = space sk = skip


Make 2

EYE SOCKET SIDE 1: Rnd 1: Beg at eyehole, ch 18. Being careful not to twist ch, join to first ch with a sl st. Ch 1, in joining make 3 sc. Mark 2nd sc as inside edge. Sc in each of the next 8 chs. In next ch make (sc, hdc, sc.) Mark hdc as outside edge. Sc in each of the next 8 chs. Join to first sc with a sl st. 22 sts made.


Rnd 2: Ch 1, and make 2 scs in same st for an inc. Make 1 sc in next marked st (mark again as center.) Make 2 scs in next st.


Sc in next 9 sts. Make 3 sc in marked st. Mark 2nd st as center. Sc in last 9 sts. Join to 1st sc made to end rnd. (26 sts made.)


Rnd 3: Ch 1 and sc in same st. Sl st in next 3 sts. Sc in next 11 sts. Make 3 sc in marked st moving marker to 2nd sc as center. Sc in last 10 sts. Join to 1st sc with sl st. End off and weave in end for 1st side. For 2nd side, leave long tail for sewing pieces tog. Note that inside edge is blunt. (30 sc made.)


Prepping inside pieces.

From center inside marker, count over 1 st on both sides and place a marker as shown below.

Sew pieces tog as shown below, removing center inside markers.



Begin Full Mask

Attach yarn with a sl st at right edge in marked st as shown below.

Rnd 1: Sc in next st. (Make 2 hdc in next st) twice. Make 2 dc in next st. Mark 2nd dc. Make 2 dc in next st. Make 2 hdc in next st. Hdc in each of the next 6 sts. Dc in next st. This will bring you to the center seam. Make trc in seam.


Dc in next st. Hdc in each of the next 6 sts. Make 2 hdc in next st. (Make 2 dc in next st) twice. Mark 3rd dc. (Make 2 hdc in next st) twice. Sc in next st. Sl st in marked st.

Remove marker and end off white yarn. Weave in end.


Attach gray yarn in right hand marked st with a sl st. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Hdc in each of the next 2 sts. Dc in next st. (Make 2 dc in next st) twice. Dc in each of the next 9 sts. (Make 2 dc in next st) twice. Dc in next st. Hdc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sl st in marked st. Remove marker and end off. Weave in end.

Begin working on bottom portion of mask.

Attach Gray yarn in same st as white sl st with a sl st.


Row 1: Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Make 2 hdcs in next st. Make hdc and dc in next st. (Dc in next st, make 2 dc in next st) 3 times. Make 2 hdc in next st. Sc in next st. This will bring you to the center seam. Sc in seam. Sc in next st. Make 2 hdc in next st. (Make 2 dc in next st, dc in next st) 3 times. Make dc and hdc in next st. Make 2 hdc in next st. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sl st in same st as white st. End off and weave in end.

Ears - Make 2.

Row 1: With Black\ yarn and H hook, ch 7. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (6 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 2 sc. Sc last 2 sc together. (4 sc made.) Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (4 sc made.)

Row 4: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc last 2 sc together. (2 sc made.) Ch 1, turn. Row 5: Sc both sc together. Ch 1, turn. Note the next step will be worked in the round.

Round 1: Make 3 sc in tip.

(Make 5 sc down side and 3 sc in corner) twice. End with making 5 sc across last side. Join to 1st sc made with sl st. End off and weave in end.

Finishing

Attach gray yarn at bottom right. Sc in each st until tip. Make 3 sc in tip. Sc down next side. End off and weave in end.


Sew both of ears to topside of mask as shown below.

Cut a 10” piece of ¼” elastic and sew to both sides at eye level. Or sew ties to either side of mask. Dip mask in your favorite stiffener being careful not to dip ties or elastic. Place on form, shape and let dry.
