Using #4 Cotton Yarn and Size H (5.0mm) Hook

Round 1: The Foundation

  • Chain 11.

  • Step 1: Dc in the 4th ch from the hook (the skipped 3 chs count as your 1st dc).

  • Step 2: Dc in each of the next 6 chs.

  • Step 3 (Curve A): In the very last ch, work 5 dc.

    • This turns the corner.

  • Step 4: Now working along the bottom of the ch, dc in the next 7 chain.

  • Step 5 (Curve B): In the base at the bottom of the starting Ch-3, work 5 dc. (This looks crowded but it is necessary to get the texture right.)

  • Step 6: Join with a sl st to the top of the Ch-3. (26 sts)

Round 2

  1. The First Side (Straight):

    • Ch 2 (this does not count as a st, creates the height needed for the first dc).

    • Dc in the first st.

    • BPdc around the next st.

    • Repeat [dc in next st, BPdc around next st] 3 more times.

    • (You have now worked 8 sts total across the1st straight side).

  2. The First Curve (Increases): We will increase in the 5 stitches that formed the curve in Round 1.

    • [2 dc in the next st, BPdc around the next st] 2 times.

    • Make 2 dc in the next st.

    • (You have added 3 extra stitches here. Total curve stitches: 8).

  3. The Second Side (Straight):

    • BPdc around the next st.

    • Dc in the next st.

    • Repeat [BPdc around next st and dc in next st] 3 more times.

    • (8 sts total for the straight back-side).

  4. The Second Curve (Increases): We will increase in the 6 sts that formed the second curve in Round 1.

    • [BPdc around the next st, make 2 dc in the next st] 3 times.

    • (You have added 3 extra sts here. Total curve sts: 9).

  5. Closing:

    • Join with a sl st to the 1st dc (not the ch-2). (33 sts)

Round 3

  1. The First Side (Straight):

    • Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch, but acts as the height for the first dc).

    • Dc in the first stitch.

    • BPdc around the next Bpdc stitch.

    • Repeat [dc in next, BPdc around next] 3 more times.

  2. The First Curve (Increases)

    • 2 dc in the next stitch.

    • Dc in the next st.

    • [ BPdc around next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in the next st] 2 times.

  3. The Second Side (Straight):

    • [ BPdc around next, dc in the next st] 4 times.

  4. The Second Curve (Increases)

    • [BPdc around next, 2 dc in next st, dc

    • in the next st] 3 times.

    • Squeeze a bpdc around the beg st.
