Materials Needed:
3 ½ ounces for small, 4 ounces for medium and 6 ounces for large, Yellow Heart Super Saver 4 ply worsted weight yarn. Scraps of grey, brown and black worsted weight yarns. Size I crochet hook. Darning needle.
Abbreviations Used:
st = stitch ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet dc = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch dec = decrease inc = decrease
Finished Hat Circumference: Small: 18” Med: 20” Large: 23” Small: Child
Med: Adult Women Large: Adult Man
Medium and Large sizes in brackets. Example: [med, large]
Gauge:
3 sc = 1”- 4 rows in sc = 1”
Begin Hat
Rnd 1: With Yellow yarn, and size I hook, ch 2. Make 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join, but mark the first st made on this round and every other round.
Rnd 2: Make 2 sc in each sc around. (16 sc.)
Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, make 2 sc in next sc) around. (24 sc.)
Rnd 4: (Sc in each of the next 2 sc, make 2 sc in next sc) around. (32 sc.) Rnd 5: (Sc in each of the next 3 sc, make 2 sc in next sc) around. (40 sc.) Rnd 6: Sc in each of the 40 sc around.
Rnd 7: Sc in each sc around increasing by 6 evenly spaced sc for a total of 46 sc.
Rnd 8: Sc in each sc around increasing by 6 evenly spaced sc for a total of 52 sc.
Rnd 9: Sc in each sc around increasing by 8 evenly spaced sc for a total of 60 sc. For Small size only Skip to Round 10 when finished with round 9. For Med and Large sizes continue with Rnd 9a. (60 sc made.)
Medium and Large Sizes - Rnd 9a: Sc in each sc around increasing by 4 evenly spaced sc for a total of 64 sc. (64 sc made.) For Medium size - Go to Rnd 10. For Large sizes continue to Large Rnds 9b and 9c.
Large Rnd 9b: Sc in each sc around increasing by 4 evenly spaced sc for a total of 68 sc. (68 sc made.)
Large Rnd 9c: Sc in each sc around increasing by 4 evenly spaced sc for a total of 72 sc. (72 sc made.)
All Sizes – Rnd 10: (Sc in each of the 60 [64, 72] sc around. Do not join, but mark first stitch made on every round.
Repeat Rnd 10 until Hat is (Small 5”, Medium 6”, Large 7” from center or starting ch-2) sl st in next st.
Start Eye Opening
Row 1: Ch 1 and turn, Sc in sl st and in next (46[50, 56]) stitches. Ch 1, turn. (47 [51, 57 scs.]
Row 2: Sc first 2 sc together for a decrease. Sc in each stitch until last 2 sc. Sc last 2 sc together. (45, [49, 55] stitches.) Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc first 2 sc together for a decrease. Sc in each stitch until last 2 sc. Sc last 2 sc together (43, [47, 53] stitches.) End off yellow and weave in end.
Row 4: Join Black in last st worked. Ch 1, sc first 2 sc together for a decrease. Sc in each stitch until last 2 sc. Sc last 2 sc together. (41, [45,51] stitches.) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 5-6: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Only work row 5 for size small and skip down to row 7.
Row 7: Make 2 sc in first sc. Single crochet in each sc until last sc. Make 2 sc in last sc. (42,[ 47, 53] stitches.) End off black and weave in end.
Row 8: Join Yellow in last st worked.Ch 1, make 2 sc in first sc. Single crochet in each sc until last sc. Make 2 sc in last sc. (43, [49, 55] stitches.) Ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Make 2 sc in first sc. Single crochet in each sc until last sc. Make 2 sc in last sc. (45, [51, 57] stitches.) Do not turn, but ch (13, [13, 17] stitches.) Attach to opposite side with a slip stitch as shown below. Turn piece to right side if needed.
Rnd 1: Single crochet in every single crochet and chain around. (60 [64, 72] stitches.)
Continue to work in the round until the bottom piece measures (6, [7, 8] inches.)
Mark the inside top and bottom middle st. Place 2 more markers in the 4th chain or stitch to the right of each marker.
Row 1: Attach Yellow yarn in 4th stich to the right of the bottom stitch as shown below.
Remove marker. Ch 1 and sc first 2 sts together. Sc in each of the next 5 sts. Sc the next 2 sts together. Ch 1, turn. (7 sc.)
Row 2: Single crochet first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 3 sts. Sc the last 2 sts together. Ch 1, turn. (5 sc.)
Row 3: Single crochet first 2 sc together. Sc in the next stitch. Sc the last 2 sts together. Ch 1, turn. (3 sc.)
Row 4: Single crochet in each sc across. End off and weave in end. (3 sc)
Turn piece around and repeat rows 1-4 above. Row 5: Sc in each sc across. End off leaving a tail long enough to sew the two ends together.
Googles
With Grey yarn ch (27, [30,36]) join to first ch with sl st.
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Join to first sc with sl st.
Row 2: Ch 1, sl st in front loop only around. Join to first st with sl st. End off leaving a 20” tail to sew to eye socket as shown below. Sew center of googles together over nose so they do not separate upon wearing.
Weave several uneven strands of brown yarn through hat at top and tie as shown below.
Mouth
With Black yarn, embroider a mouth as shown below.
