Materials Needed:

3 ½ ounces Green for small, 4 ounces for medium and 6 ounces for large, Red Heart Super Saver 4 ply worsted weight yarn. Scraps of Black Red Heart Super Saver 4 ply worsted weight yarn. Scraps of size 3 black cotton crochet thread. Size I crochet hook for worsted weight yarn and size 4 steel crochet hook for thread. Darning needle. Elmers Glue, wax paper.

  • Begin Hat

Rnd 1: With Green yarn, and size I hook, ch 2 (or make a magic circle.) Make 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join, but mark the first st made on this Rnd and every other Rnd.


Rnd 2: Make 2 sc in each sc around (12 sc made)


Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, make 2 sc in next sc) around (18 sc made.)


Rnd 4: (Sc in each of the next 2 sc, make 2 sc in next sc) around (24 sc made.) Rnd 5: (Sc in each of the next 3 sc, make 2 sc in next sc) around (30 sc made.) Rnd 6: (Sc in each of the next 2 sc, make 2 sc in next sc) around (40 sc made.) Rnd 7: (Sc in each of the next 4 sc, make 2 sc in next sc) around (48 sc made.) Start Eye and Nose Opening


Row 1: Ch 1 and turn, Sc in next sc and in next (45, 51, 57) stitches. Ch 1, turn. (46 [52, 58 scs.]


Row 2: Sc first 2 sc together for a decrease. Sc in each stitch until last 2 sc. Sc last 2 sc together. (44, 50, 56] stitches.) Ch 1, turn.


Row 3: Sc first 2 sc together for a decrease. Sc in each stitch until last 2 sc. Sc last 2 sc together (42, 48, 54] stitches.) Ch 1, turn.


Row 4: Sc first 2 sc together for a decrease. Sc in each stitch until last 2 sc. Sc last 2 sc together. (40,46,52 stitches.) Ch 1, turn.


Rows 5-6: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Only work row 5 for size small and skip down to row 7.


Row 7: Make 2 sc in first sc. Sc in each st until last sc. Make 2 sc in last sc. (42, 48, 54] stitches.) Ch 1, turn.


Row 8: Make 2 sc in first sc. Single crochet in each sc until last sc. Make 2 sc in last sc. (44, 50, 56] stitches.) Ch 1, turn.

Row 9: Make 2 sc in first sc. Single crochet in each sc until last sc. Make 2 sc in last sc. (46, [52, 58 stitches.) End off and weave in end.

Marke top 2 center sts as shown above.


Bridge of Nose

Row 1: With green yarn and I hook, attach yarn to first marked st as shown below.


Ch 1 and sc in same st. Remove markers and sc in each of the next st. (2 sc made.) Rows 2-3: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in 1st st. Sk next st and sc in last st. (2 sc made.) Row 4: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in 1st st. Make 2 sc in next st. Sc in last st. (3 sc made.) Row 5: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in 1st st. Make 2 sc in next st. Sc in last st. (4 sc made.) Row 6: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in 1st st. Make 2 sc in next st. Sc in last sts. (5 sc made.)

Row 7: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each st across. (5 sc made.) End off and weave in ends. Set piece aside.

You should now have 46 (52, 58) sts across the back and 5 sts across the bridge of the nose.


Bottom of Mask

Rnd 1: With right side facing, attack green yarn at center back. Ch 1 and sc in each st until eye opening. Ch 4 and sc in first 2 sts on nose bridge. Sc in next st and mark it as center front.

Sc in remaining 2 sts on nose bridge. Ch 4 for next eye opening and sc in each of the last sts across back. Do not join but do keep marking 1st st and center nose st. You should now have made 51 (57, 63) scs and 2 sets of ch-4’s.

Rnd 2: Sc in each st until first eye opening. Sc in each of the 4 chs. Sc in each of the next 2 sc on bridge of nose. Make 2 sc in marked st. (Mark both sts as center.) Sc in each of the next 4 chs. Sc in each remaining sc across back. [59 (65, 71) scs made.]

At end of rnd 2 count over 10 scs on each side of markers and mark these 2 sts also as shown below.


Rnd 3: Sc in each st around until 1st marked st. Make 2 sc in marked st. Marking only 1st st. (Sc in next 4 sts. Make 2 sc in next st) 2 times. Make 2 sc in next center st. You can remove both center markers at this time. (Sc in each of the next 4 sts. Make 2 sc in next st) 2 times. Mark the last st you made.

Sc in each remaining st around. [65 (71, 77) scs made.]


Rnds 4-5: Sc in each of the 65 (71, 77) scs around. Replace markers as needed.


Rnd 6: Sc in each st until 1st marker. Sc in marked st and next 11 sts. Mak 2 sc in next st. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Make 2 sc in next st. Sc in each st around to back. [67, (73, 79) sc made.]


Next Rnds

Work even in sc unil piece measures 9” (10”, 11”) from crown. Keep replacing markers.


Decrease Rnd: Sc around until first marker. Note: You may remove markers on this rnd. (Sc next 2 tog. Sc in each of the next 3 sts) twice. (Sc next 2 tog. Sc in each of the next 2 sts) twice. (Sc next 2 tog. Sc in each of the next 3 sts) twice. Sc next 2 sts tog. Sc around to center back. [60 (66, 72) sc made.]


Bottom

Continue to work in the Rnd until piece measures (12, [14, 15] inches) from beg to bottom.


Finishing Eyes

Attach green yarn in eye opening. Ch 1 and make 24 evenly spaced sc around. Join to first sc with sl st.

Top Hair

1. Cut 14 pieces of 7” yarn. 2. Fold yarn in ½. 3. Hook center of yarn. Draw loop end through top of hat as shown below. 4. Draw tail of hair through loop. 5. Tighten. 6. Repeat around top of hat.


Fixing Hair

Apply a fair amount of glue to hair and rub in.

Separate the hair into 3 sections. Trim 2 sections to be smaller than the main section. Arrange as shown below on a piece of wax paper and let dry.


Eyebrows - Make 2

Row 1: With black cotton crochet thread and size 4 steel crochet hook, ch 25. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 chs. Sc in each of the next 5 chs. Hdc in each of the next 4 chs. Dc in next 6 chs. Hdc in next ch. Sc in next 3 chs. Sl st in last ch. Ch 1 and turn.


Row 2: Sk sl st and sc in each of the next 4 sts. Hdc in next 3 sts. Sc in next 4 sts. Sl st in next 6 sts. End off leaving remaining sts unworked. Leave a tail to later sew to hat.


Pin and sew eyebrows to hat as shown below.


Nose

- With Black Yarn and I hook

Make a magic circle. Ch 1 and make 6 sc in circle. Tighten circle.


Rnd 1: Ch 1 and make 2 sc in 1st st. Hdc in next st. Make 2 dc in next st. Hdc in next st. Make 2 sc in next st. Sc in last st. Join to 1st st with sl st. End off leaving a long tail to sew to mask as shown above.


Mouth

With a pencil or pen, draw a straight line down from nose about 1 ¼” long. Make a paper template of how you would like the mouth to look. Place the template on mask and draw around. Flip template and repeat on opposite side.

With Black yarn or thread, embroider mouth following lines as shown below.
