Harlequin Costume Mask


Materials needed

½ ounce of Red worsted weight cotton yarn such as Peaches and Cream.

½ ounce of Black worsted weight cotton yarn 10” piece of ¼” elastic or optional ties Darning Needle

Size H hook Stiffener

Mask form - could be bought or an old coffee can will work.


Abbreviations Used:

st = stitch ch = chain

sl st = slip stitch

sc = single crochet dc = double crochet trc = treble crochet tog = together

sp = space sk=skip


Make 2

EYE SOCKET SIDE 1: Hint - It always is easier if you mark your beggining st. I use a different color marker so it is less confusing. Rnd 1: With Black and size H hook, begin at eyehole, ch 24. Being careful not to twist ch, join to first ch with a sl st. Ch 1, in joining make 3 sc. Mark 2nd sc as inside edge. (Sc in each of the next 5 chs. Make 3 sc, mark 2nd sc as center bottom) 3 times. Sc in each of the last 5 sts. (32 sts made.)


Rnd 2: Ch 1, and make 2 scs in same st for an inc. Sc in marked st (mark again. This is the center inside eye st.) Make 2 scs in next st. Sc in next 6 sts. Make 2 sc in marked st. Remove marker. Sc in each of the next 7 sts. Make 3 sc in marked st. Mark 2nd sc as outside edge. Sc in each of the next 7 sts. Make 2 sc in marked st. Remove marker. Sc in each of the last 6 sts. (38 sc made.) End off and weave in end.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 for opposite side.


Prepping inside pieces.

From center inside marker, count over 2 sts on both sides and place a marker as shown below.

Sew pieces tog through the 5 marked sts as shown below, removing center inside markers.

Begin Full Mask

Attach red yarn at right edge in marked st as shown below.

Rnd 1: Ch 1 and make 2 scs in same st replacing marker in 1st sc. Sc in next 8 sts. (Make 2 sc in next st) twice.

Sc in each of the next 7 sts. This will bring you to center forehead of mask. Make 1 sc in joining where you sewed both pieces tog. (22 sts made so far)

Note: If at anytime you need more or less sts to work in just inc or dec to get to the correct amount.


Begin working on next side of mask. (Mark this side as bottom.)

Sc in each of the next 7 sts. (Make 2 sc in next st) twice. Sc in each of the next 8 sts. This will bring you to the next outside marked st. Make 2 sc in marked st moving marker to 2nd sc made.


Sc in each of the next 8 sts. (Make 2 sc in next st) twice. (Mark this side as bottom of mask.) Sc in next 7 sts. This will bring you once again to the center bottom of mask.) Sc in seam. Sc in each of the next 7 sts. (Make 2 sc in next st) twice. Sc in each of the last 8 sts. Join to 1st sc with sl st. End off and weave in end. Set piece aside. (82 scs made.)


Top Side Pieces - Make 2 (1 black and 1 red.)

Row 1: With (red/black) yarn and size H hook, ch 11. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1 and turn. (10 sc made.)


Row 2: Make 2 sc in 1st st. Sc in each of the next 7 sts. Sc last 2 sts tog. Ch 1 and turn. (10 sc made.)


Row 3: Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (10 sc made.)


Row 4: Make 2 sc in 1st st. Sc in each of the next 7 sts. Sc last 2 sts tog. Ch 1 and turn. (10 sc made.)


Row 5: Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (10 sc made.)

Row 26: Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in each of the next 5 sts. Ch 1 and turn. (6 sc made.)


Row 27: Make 2 sc in 1st st. Sc in next st. (Sc in next 2 sts tog) twice. Ch 1 and turn. (5 sc made.)


Row 28: Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1 and turn. (4 sc made.)


Row 29: Make 2 sc in 1st st. Sc in next st. Sc last 2 sts tog. Ch 1 and turn. (4 sc made.)


Row 30: (Sc next 2 sts tog) twice. Ch 1 and turn. (2 sc made.)

Row 31: Sc both sts tog. Ch 1 and turn.


Row 32: Sc in last st.


Finishing: Sc evenly around entire piece making inc and dec as needed. Try to make the correct amount of sts on the inside joining as shown below.

Set piece aside and repeat for other color.


When both pieces are finished place together as shown below.

Sew tog at center seam.


Pin to base stretching to fit and sew in place.


Cut a piece of ¼" elastic 10" long. Sew to both sides ear level.

Dip in stiffener being careful to keep elastic dry. Place on form, shape and let dry.
