Universal Sponge Holder Instructions

These instructions are designed to be easily adjustable. The sample size is tailored for a standard 4" wide by 2 ½" high sponge, but the key is to measure your specific sponge first and follow the guidelines below.

With I hook and scrubbie yarn make a ch that is a little over 4" or the length of your Sponge.

Row 1. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across.

Row 2. Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each of st across.

Continue repeating Row 2 until the piece measures approximately 3 inches from the beginning.

Alternatively, use this method for a custom fit: Work the rows until the length measures 1 to 1½ inches longer than half the total length of your sponge.

This extra length will create an overlap section, which is essential for easily inserting the sponge and keeping it securely held in the pocket.

End off and weave in the end. Set aside.

Back Panel - Make 2

With cotton yarn and I hook, make a ch that is a little over 3".

Row 1. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in ch across.

Row 2. Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each st across.

Continue repeating Row 2 until the piece measures approximately 1 ½ " from the beginning.

Alternatively, use this method for a custom fit: Work the rows until the length measures 1 to 1½ inches longer than half the total length of your sponge.

This extra length will create an overlap section, which is essential for easily inserting the sponge and keeping it securely held in the pocket.

Handle (if desired)

With cotton yarn, ch 19, or about 5 stitches longer than the width of your sponge. Row 1. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (18 sc)

Row 2. Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each of the 18 sts across.

Rep row 2 twice more for all sizes. End off leaving a long tail.

Assembling

Place 1 back panel on the sponge with a little hanging over the edge.

Now lay the other panel in the same way, overlapping in the middle.

Place the handle over the center and pin in place.

Now sew the overlapping pieces and handle all together at the sides.

Now place the scrubbie piece on top with the insides facing each other. Attach the cotton yarn in any corner. Ch 1 and make 3 sc in the corner. Sc evenly around the entire piece making 3 sc in each corner.

Edging

(Ch 1 and sl st in the next st) around making 2 in each corner. Wrap a few with a bow and give as a gift.
