Materials needed

Three and one half ounces of 4 Ply worsted weight green yarn. Small amounts of #5 threads – black, red, white and blue. Sizes H and 4 crochet hooks.


Sizes

Adult Man Cowl: 22” circumference x 11” high

Adult Woman Cowl: 20" circumference x 10" high and Child Cowl: 18" circumference x 9" high


Cowl

With green yarn and H hook chain 54 [64, 74] loosely. (Note: Make chain long enough to go comfortably around head. You may make more or less chains according to head size.) Being careful not to twist chain, join to first chain with a slip stitch.

Round 1: Chain 1, single crochet in each chain around. Do not join.

Next Rounds

Single crochet in first single crochet and each single crochet around. Continue to work in the round until piece is 9 [10, 11] inches in length. End off and weave in end.

Nose

With Black cotton crochet thread and size 4 crochet hook, chain 11.

Round 1: Slip stitch in 2nd chain from hook. Single crochet in each of the next 2 chains. Half double crochet in each of the next 2 chains. Double crochet in each of the next 3 chains. Treble crochet in next chain. In end chain make (6 treble crochets, chain 4, slip st, chain 4[email protected]. and 6 more treble crochets.) Working on opposite side of chain, make treble crochet in next stitch. Double crochet in each of the next 3 chains. Half double crochet in each of the next 2 chains. Single crochet in each of the next 2 chains. Slip stitch in last chain. Pin and sew to cowl as shown below.


Mouth

Row 1: With Black cotton thread and size 4 crochet hook, chain 22. Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across. (21 stitches) Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Make 2 single crochets in first stitch. Single crochet in each remaining st across. (22 stitches) Ch 3, turn.

Row 3: Turning ch-3 counts as first double crochet now and throughout. Double crochet in each of the next 7 stitches. Half double crochet in next stitch. Single crochet in each of the next 3 stiches.

Half double crochet in next st. Double crochet in each of the last 9 stitches. (22 stitches) Chain 3, turn.

Row 4: Double crochet in each of the next 8 stitches. Half double crochet in next stitch. Single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches. Half double crochet in next stitch. Double crochet in each of the last 7 stitches. Make 2 double crochets in last st. (23 stitches) Ch 3, turn.

Row 5: Double crochet in same space as turning chain-3 for an increase. Double crochet in each of the next 8 stitches. Half double crochet in next stitch. Single crochet in each of the next 3 stiches.

Half double crochet in next st. Double crochet in each of the next 8stitches. Make 2 double crochets in last stitch. (25 stitches) Chain 2, turn.

Row 6: Double crochet in each of the next 9 stitches. Half double crochet in next stitch. Single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches. Half double crochet in next stitch. Double crochet in each of the last 10 stitches. Chain 2, turn.

Row 7: Double crochet first 2 single crochet together. Double crochet in each of the next 4 stitches. Half double crochet in next st. Sc in each of the next 7 stitches. Half double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. Double crochet in each of the next 8 stitches. (24 sts) Chain 1, turn.

Row 8: Single crochet in each of the first 2 stitches. Mark first stitch. Half double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. Double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches. Half double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches. Single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. Slip stitch in each of the next 3 stitches. Sc in next stitch. Half double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. Double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. Treble crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. Double crochet in next stitch. Half double crochet in last stitch. End off.


Top Gum

Attach Red thread with a slip stitch in marked stitch. Remove marker. Chain 1, single crochet in same stitch. In next stitch make (half double crochet and double crochet. Make 3 treble crochet in next stitch. Treble crochet in next st. Double crochet in next stitch. In next stitch make (double crochet and half double crochet.) In next stitch make (half double crochet and single crochet.) Slip st in next st. End off red and weave in end.


Bottom Gum

Attach Red thread with a slip stitch in bottom starting chain as shown below.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same chain and in each chain across. (21 sc)Make 3 more single crochet up side. Slip stitch in next st. 24 sts made – do not count slip stitch as stitch. Do not chain 1. Turn.

Row 2: Skip slip stitch, slip stitch in first single crochet. Single crochet in next stitch. Make 2 single crochet in next stitches. Single crochet in each of the next 20 stitches. Slip stitch in last stitch. (23 stitches not counting slip stitches.) Do not chain 1. Turn.

Row 3: Skip slip stitch, slip stitch in first single crochet. In next stitch make (single crochet and half double crochet.) Double crochet in next stitch. (Make 2 treble crochet in next stitch. Treble crochet in next stitch) twice. Treble crochet in each of the next 3 stitches. Double crochet in next stitch. Half double crochet in next stitch. Single crochet in next stitch. Slip stitch in each of the next 2 stitches.

Single crochet in next stitch. Half double crochet in next stitch. Double crochet in next stitch. Make 4 treble crochets in next stitch. Double crochet in next stitch. Half double crochet in next stitch. Single crochet in next stitch. Slip stitch in slip stitch. End off and weave in end.



Tooth 1

Make 3 (Note: teeth do not have to be perfect)

Row 1: With white and size 4 hook, starting at bottom, chain 4. Single crochet in second chain from hook and in each of the next 2 chain. (3 single crochet made.) Chain 1, turn.

Rows 2-3: Single crochet in each of the 3 single crochets. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Single crochet in first single crochet. Skip next single crochet. Single crochet in last single crochet. End off leaving a tail to sew to mouth. Set aside.

Tooth 2– Make 2

Row 1: With white and size 4 hook, starting at bottom, chain 3. Single crochet in second chain from hook and in next chain. (2 single crochet made.) Chain 1, turn.

Row 2: Single crochet in each of the 2 single crochets. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Single crochet both single crochets together. End off leaving a tail to sew to mouth. Set aside.

Tooth 3– Make 1

Row 1: With white and size 4 hook, starting at bottom, chain 5. Single crochet in second chain from hook and in each of the next3 chain. (4 single crochet made.) Chain 1, turn.

Rows 2-3: Single crochet in each of the 4 single crochets. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Single crochet in first single crochet. Single crochet next 2 single crochets together. Single crochet in last single crochet. (3 single crochet.) Ch 1, turn.

Row 5: Single crochet in first single crochet. Skip next single crochet. Single crochet in last single crochet. End off leaving a tail to sew to mouth. Set aside.

Tooth 4

Make 2

Row 1: With white and size 4 hook, starting at bottom, chain 5. Single crochet in second chain from hook and in each of the next3 chain. (4 single crochet made.) Chain 1, turn.

Rows 2-5: Single crochet in each of the 4 single crochets. Ch 1, turn. At end of row 5, do not chain one but, end off leaving a tail to sew to mouth. Set aside.

Finishing: Pin teeth to mouth as shown in diagram. Sew using the tails. Weave in all ends. Sew mouth to face as shown on cover.


Eyeball

Round 1: With black chain 2, make 6 single crochets in 2nd chain from hook. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch. End off.

Round 2: Join Blue in any single crochet from round one. Chain 1, make 2 single crochets in each single crochet around. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch.

Round 3: Chain 1, (single crochet in single crochet, make 2 single crochet in next single crochet) around. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch. End off and weave in end.

Round 4: Join White in any single crochet from round three. Chain one, single crochet in same stitch. Make two single crochet in next stitch. **Single crochet in each of the next two single crochets. Make two single crochets in next stitch. * Repeat from * * to * around. End with, single crochet in last stitch. Join to first stitch with slip stitch to end round. (24 single crochet)

Round 5: Chain one, single crochet in each single crochet around. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch.

Round 6: Chain one **Single crochet in first three single crochets. Two single crochets in next single crochet. * Repeat from ** to * around. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch. (30 single crochet.)

Rounds 7-10: Chain one, single crochet in each single crochet in stitch around. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch.

Round 11: Chain one, single crochet in same stitch. **Make single crochet decrease over next two stitches. Single crochet in each of the next two stitches. * Repeat from ** to * around. (24 stitches.)

Round 12: Chain one, single crochet and each single crochet around join to first single crochet with slip stitch.

Round 13: Chain one, single crochet in same stitch ** decrease single crochet over next two single crochets. Single crochet in next single crochet*. Repeat from ** to * around. (18 stitches.)

At this time stuff the eyeball lightly with fiberfil.


Row 14: Chain one,**single crochet next two single crochets together.* Repeat from ** to * around. Join to first single crochet with slip stitch. Repeat this row. End off leaving a 12” tail. Sew remaining opening together.

With red cotton crochet thread, make a large holed sewing needle. Make random stiches as shown below To look like broken capillaries as shown below. Remember – you do not have to be perfect – they are broken capillaries Leave tail of thread sticking out of the back center of eye to sew optic nerve.

Set aside.


Optic Nerve

Make several chains that are about 1 1/2” long. (I chained 13 for each.) Leave a 10” tail when ending off, but weave other end in.


Gather all finished ends together. Using the thread you left in place earlier on the eyeball, sew ends together to back eye center.


Sew ends securely to eye ball. Sew all chains together for about ½”. End off and weave in end. Using the tails on the chains – sew to hat as shown below.
