Superhero Safety Belt Covers: Crochet Patterns (Superman, Batman, Spider-Man)

Create your own superhero safety belt covers! This page offers crochet patterns for Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man designs. Easy-to-follow instructions for a unique, handmade car accessory

Abbreviations Used

  • ch=ch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • trc = treble crochet
  • rep = repeat
  • beg = beginning
  • rem=remaining
  • tog=together
  • sp=space

Materials needed for all: 8” piece of Velcro, darning needle, scissors,  Scraps of black and 2 white #3 thread and sizes I and D hooks. (Aunt Lydia’s #3 threads used.)  

Batman – Materials Needed: (Red Heart Super Saver yarns used.)  ½ ounce Black worsted weight yarn, ⅛ ounce peach worsted weight yarn. ¼ ounce yellow worsted weight yarn, ¼ ounce gray worsted weight yarn.

Superman – Materials Needed: 1 oz. Blue, ½ oz Red, Yellow, ⅛ oz Peach (Red Heart Super Saver yarns used.) 

Spiderman – Materials Needed: 1 ¼ oz Blue, 1 oz. Red (Red Heart Super Saver yarns used.) 

Batman Safety Belt Cover

Body of Piece

With Black worsted weight #4 yarn and size I hook, ch 24.

Row 1.  Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.)

Rows 2-11. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Black and weave in the end. Attach Yellow worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 12 – 15. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Yellow and weave in the end. Attach  Gray worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 16 – 26. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Gray and weave in the end. Attach Black worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 27 – 28. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Black and weave in the end. Attach Peach worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 29 – 33. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Peach and weave in the end. Attach Black worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 34 – 39. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

Finishing:  Sc evenly around the entire piece using the main color or changing colors if you wish.

End off Black and weave in the end. Set the piece aside. 

Eyes

Left Eye

With white # 3 thread and size D crochet hook, ch 7. 

Rnd 1.  Make 5 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Dc in the next st. Hdc in the next st and sc in the next st. In the end st make a (sl st, ch 1 and a sl st.) Working on the opposite side of the ch, sc in each of the next 3 chs. Join to the 2nd ch of the beg ch. End off leaving a long tail to sew to face.

Right Eye

Rnd 1.  With white # 3 thread and size D crochet hook, ch 6 and sl st in 2nd ch from the hook. Sc in the next ch. Hdc in the next ch. Dc in the next ch. In the end ch make 5 dc and 1 hdc.  Sc in each of the next 3 chs. Sl st into the beginning st. End off leaving a long tail to sew to face.

Ears – make 2

Rnd 1.  With Black #4 yarn and size I hook, ch 7.  Make 5 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Dc in the next st. Hdc in the next st and sc in the next st. In the end st make a (sl st, ch 1 and a sl st.) Working on the opposite side of the ch, sc in the next st. Hdc in the next st and dc in the last st. Join to the 1st dc with a sl st. End off leaving a long tail to sew to face.

Oval

Rnd 1. With yellow, ch 6. Make 5 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Dc in each of the next 2 chs. Make 5 dc in the end ch. Working on the opposite side of the ch, dc in each of the next 2 chs. Join to the top of the beginning with a sl st. 

Rnd 2. (Make 2 sc in the next st) 5 times. Sc in the next 2 sts. (Make 2 sc in the next st) 5 times. Sc in the next 2 sts.

Bat

With size D hook and size 3 black thread make a magic circle and ch 1.

Body: Make 6 sc in the ring. Join to the 1st sc with a sl st. 

Ears: Ch 3 and sl st into the 1st st. (1st ear.) Ch 3 and sl st into the next st. (2nd ear)

1st Wing: Sl st into the next sc on the body. Ch 7 and dc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Ch 3 and sl st back into the top of the dc just made. Sc in the next ch. Sl st in the next ch and ch 4. Sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook for a picot. Hdc into the same st. Sl st into the next st on the body.

Tail: In the next sc on the body make a sc and hdc. Ch 2 and sl st back into the top of the hdc. In the next st on the body make a hdc and a sc. Sl st into the next 3 sts on the body.

2nd Wing. Ch 7 and  turn. Dc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Ch 3 and sl st back into the top of the dc just made. Sc in the next ch. Sl st in the next ch and ch 4. Sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook for a picot. Hdc into the same st. Sl st into the next st on the body. Join and end off leaving a long tail.

Assembling: Fold the large piece in thirds as shown below.

  1. Fold the top side ⅓ down.
  2. Fold the bottom up ⅓ and over the top.
  3. Turn to work on the front.
  4. Sew or Glue the *” velcro strips to where you want the overlat. (I prefer Aleines fabric glue – it holds well and beats sewing velcro.

Sew bat to oval as shown below.

Sew emblem to front as shown below making sure To only sew to the top layer and with the bat’s ears up towards the face.

Pin and sew in place.

Pin and sew the eyes in place.

Pin and sew on ears.

Superman

With Blue worsted weight #4 yarn and size I hook, ch 24.

Row 1.  Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.)

Rows 2-11. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Blue and weave in the end. Attach Red worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Row 12. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Red and weave in the end. Attach Yellow worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 13 – 15. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Yellow and weave in the end. Attach  Blue worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 16 – 26. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Blue and weave in the end. Attach Red worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 27 – 28. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Red and weave in the end. Attach Peach worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 29 – 33. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Peach and weave in the end. Attach Blue worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 34 – 39. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

Finishing:  Sc evenly around the entire piece using the main color or changing colors if you wish.

End off Blue and weave in the end. Set the piece aside. 

Emblem 

Pentagon

With Yellow yarn and size I hook, make a magic circle.

Rnd 1. Make 7 sc in the ring. Do not join but do mark the first st now and throughout.

Rnd 2. Ch 1(does not count as a stitch). Make 2 sc in each st around. (14 sc made.) 

Rnd 3. Sc in each of the next 3 sts. (Make 3 sc in the next st) 2 times. Sc in each of the next 3 sts. Make 3 sc in the next st.

Sc in each of the next 3 sts. (Make 3 sc in the next st) twice. (24 sc made.)

End off Yellow and weave in the end.  (If you know how to do an invisible join, this greatly improves the look.) Join Red in the last st worked.

Rnd 4. Ch 1 and sc in each Of the next 4 sts. Make 3 sc in the next st. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Make 3 sc in the next st. (Sc in each of the next 5 sts. Make 3 sc in the next st) 2 times. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Make 3 sc in the next st. Sc in the last st. (34 sc made.) Join and end off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Middle “S”

Ch 22.  Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. Sl st in each of the next 4 sts. (Make 2 sc in the next st) twice. Sl st in the next 5 sts. Sl st the next 4 sts tog. Sl st in each of the next 4 sts. Sc in the last st.

Pin and sew the emblem.

Eyes

Left Eye

With white # 3 thread and size D crochet hook, ch 7. 

Rnd 1.  Make 5 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Dc in the next st. Hdc in the next st and sc in the next st. In the end st make a (sl st, ch 1 and a sl st.) Working on the opposite side of the ch, sc in each of the next 3 chs. Join to the 2nd ch of the beg ch. End off leaving a long tail to sew to face.

Right Eye

Rnd 1.  With white # 3 thread and size D crochet hook, ch 6 and sl st in 2nd ch from the hook. Sc in the next ch. Hdc in the next ch. Dc in the next ch. In the end ch make 5 dc and 1 hdc.  Sc in each of the next 3 chs. Sl st into the beginning st. End off leaving a long tail to sew to face.

Embroider mouth as shown below.7

Spiderman

Materials Needed:  Blue and Red

With Blue worsted weight #4 yarn and size I hook, ch 24.

Row 1.  Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.)

Rows 2-14. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Blue and weave in the end. Attach Red worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 15-16. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Red and weave in the end. Attach Blue worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 17 – 28. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

End off Blue and weave in the end. Attach Red worsted weight #4 yarn in the last st worked.

Rows 29 – 39. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (23 sc made.) 

Finishing:  Sc evenly around the entire piece using the main color or changing colors if you wish.

End off and weave in the end. Set the piece aside. 

Eyes

Left Eye

With white # 3 thread and size D crochet hook, ch 7. 

Rnd 1.  Make 5 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Dc in the next st. Hdc in the next st and sc in the next st. In the end st make a (sl st, ch 1 and a sl st.) Working on the opposite side of the ch, sc in each of the next 3 chs. Join to the 2nd ch of the beg ch.  End off white and weave in the end. Join #3 Black thread in the Right Side  at the pointy end.

With Black in the point make (sc, picot and sc. Sc in each of the next 5 sts. (Make 2 sc in the next st) 4 times. Sc in each st until you reach the beginning sc. Sl st into the beginning sc. End off leaving a long tail to sew to face.

Right Eye

Rnd 1.  With white # 3 thread and size D crochet hook, ch 6 and sl st in 2nd ch from the hook. Sc in the next ch. Hdc in the next ch. Dc in the next ch. In the end ch make 5 dc and 1 hdc.  Sc in each of the next 3 chs. Sl st into the beginning st.  End off white and weave in the end. Join #3 Black thread in the Right Side  at the pointy end. 

With Black in the point make (sc, picot and sc. Sc in each of the next 5 sts. (Make 2 sc in the next st) 4 times. Sc in each st until you reach the beginning sc. Sl st into the beginning sc. End off leaving a long tail to sew to face. Sc in each st until you reach the beginning sc. Sl st into the beginning sc. End off leaving a long tail to sew to face.

Red shoulder to waist triangle

With red and I hook ch 11.

Row 1.  Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (10 sc made.)

Row 2.  Sc the 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in the next 6 sts. Sc the last 2 sts tog. Ch 1 and turn. (8 sc made.)

Row  3. Sc  In each of the 8 sts across. Ch 1 and turn. (8 sc made.)

Row 4. Sc in each of the next 3 sts. Sc the next 2 sts tog. Sc in each of the last 3 sts. Ch 1 and turn. (7 sc made.)

Row 5. Sc  In each of the 7 sts across. Ch 1 and turn. (7 sc made.)

Row 6. Sc the 1st 2  sts tog.  Sc in each of the next 3 sts. Sc  the next 2 sts tog.  Ch 1 and turn. (5 sc made.)

Row  7. Sc  the 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in  the next  st.  Sc the last 2 sts tog. (3 sc made.)

Rows 8-9. Sc in each of the 3 sts across. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 10. Sc in the 1st st. Sk the next st and sc in the last st. (2 sc made)

Sc evenly around the entire piece, making increases and decreases as needed. Join to the 1st sc made and end off leaving a long tail.

Spider 

With # Black thread and size D hook, make a magic circle. 

Rnd 1. Ch 1 and make 6 sc in the ring. Do NOT join. 

Rnd 2. Make 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc made.) 

Rnd 3. Sc in each of the 12 sts around. 

Slip st into the next st. Ch 2 and make a puff st for the head.

End off and weave in the end. 

Legs. 

Start all leg chs with a long tail to later sew to body.

Starting from Front Legs to longest bottom legs. Make 2 of each

1. Leaving a long tail make a sl knot and ch 8, end off and pull the thread extremely tight. 

Cut. 

2. Leaving a long tail make a sl knot and ch 10, end off and pull the thread extremely tight. Cut.

3. Leaving a long tail make a sl knot and ch 12, end off and pull the thread extremely tight. Cut. 

4. Leaving a long tail make a sl knot and ch 14, end off and pull the thread extremely tight. Cut.

Sew to the body starting at the body towards The head with the shortest 1st. 

Finishing

On the body, mark where you want to place the legs. (4 on each side.) You can use markers or a piece of thread as a marker. 

Pull the legs through using the long tie you left and secure using the tail and a needle. Once secure, end off and weave in the tail. (Start at the top with 1 then 2, etc placing the legs.)

Position and sew the spider to the middle piece as shown below.

Rnd 1. With black #3 thread and a size D hook make a magic ring. Ch 1 and make 8 sc in the ring. Join to the 1st sc with a sl st. 

Rnd 2. Ch 5 (counts as a dc and ch2.) Make a dc in the 1st sc. Ch 2, (make a dc in the next sc and ch 2) around. Sl st into the 3rd ch of the beginning ch 5.

Rnd 3. Ch 7, (dc in the next dc, ch 4) 7 times. Sl st in the 3rd ch of the beginning ch 7. (8 dc made.)

Rnd 4. 

Ch 9, (dc in the next dc, ch 5) 7 times. Sl st in the 3rd ch of the beginning ch 9. (8 dc made.)

Rnd 5.  Ch 11, (tc in the next dc, ch 9) 7 times. Sl st in the 3rd ch of the beginning ch 11. (8 dc made.)

Sew to the top center of the piece.

Sew eyes over the web to the center of the face as shown below.
